A motorist died early Sunday morning following a crash on Highway 138 just north of the Cajon Pass involving a jack-knifed big rig and a pickup truck engulfed in flames.
The collision happened near Rastall Road, a few miles south of Phelan. The pickup quickly caught fire.
As California Highway Patrol units were responding, the big rig driver got out of his vehicle and started wandering around the highway, according to the CHP. The semi, which toppled over onto the highway, also then started to catch fire.
When the units arrived, they found the body of the pickup driver inside the flaming vehicle and called the San Bernardino County coroner.
It wasn’t clear Sunday if the semi driver was injured.
The driver of the pickup has not been identified.
The jack-knifed big rig blocked the highway for hours. By around 8 a.m., the highway was reopened.
