Motorcyclist, 51, killed in freeway crash in Riverside

A Riverside motorcyclist was killed in that city after crashing while transitioning from the 60 Freeway to the 91 Freeway on Sunday afternoon, June 13, the California Highway Patrol said Monday, June 14.

At about 4:51 p.m., the CHP responded to a report of a motorcycle down eastbound on the eastbound 60 Freeway transition road to the westbound 91 Freeway. Officers located a blue Harley-Davidson Road Glide on its side, blocking the roadway, the CHP said.

The rider, Derek Escarcega, 51, had been ejected from the motorcycle and was found unresponsive. At 4:58 p.m., Escarcega was pronounced dead, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

A preliminary investigation suggests the Harley-Davidson was travelling at an undetermined high rate of speed when the rider was unable to negotiate the turn, causing the Harley-Davison to collide into the guardrail and Escarcega to be ejected into the road, the CHP said.
