A 21-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night, May 25, after he allegedly abandoned his car after it collided with another vehicle in Moreno Valley. The crash caused a fiery wreck that resulted in one death, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
At about 11:47 PM, deputies responded to a crash near the intersection of Iris Avenue and Camino Flores. A Toyota Camry was found engulfed in flames with an unresponsive person in the car. Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire crews responded and extinguished the fire. The driver, the sole occupant, was determined to be dead, the Sheriff’s Department said.
An investigation revealed the Toyota was traveling west on Iris Avenue when it entered the intersection at Camino Flores against a red light, the Sheriff’s Department said. At the same time, a BMW 325i was turning left from Iris Avenue, heading toward Camino Flores when it struck the driver’s side of the Toyota, causing it to careen into a light pole and burst into flames, authorities said.
The driver of the BMW then allegedly abandoned the car and fled north on Camino Flores, beyond the view of witnesses, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
It was discovered the registered owner of the BMW was Jamal McCoy of Moreno Valley, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Deputies went to McCoy’s home, where he was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run.
The identity of the driver of the Toyota was not immediately available.
Anyone with information about the incident was encouraged to call Deputy Dustin Deanne with the Sheriff’s Department at 951-486-6887.
