Claremont burglary suspects arrested after freeway pursuit ends in crash near Downey

Four burglary suspects were arrested following a police pursuit from Claremont that ended in a rollover crash in Downey, police said Monday, May 17.

On Sunday, May 16, the Claremont Police Department was called at about 8:06 p.m. about three people seen carrying baseball bats in the back of a house in the 800 block of Brigham Young Drive. Responding officers located a bat in the yard, however, the three people were not located, police said.

At 8:27 p.m., police were alerted to a residential burglary alarm in the 4100 block of New Hampshire Avenue, a couple of blocks north of the Brigham Young Drive home. When responding officers arrived, they saw a white SUV leaving the area.

An officer in an unmarked police car located the SUV and followed behind it. While tracking the SUV, a home burglary was confirmed at the New Hampshire Avenue location, according to police.

The SUV traveled west on the 210 Freeway and then headed south onto the 605 Freeway as additional Claremont officers arrived to assist along with a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, police said.

The California Highway Patrol attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the SUV and a pursuit ensued, according to police.

The CHP followed the SUV onto the westbound 105 Freeway where the suspects attempted to take the exit at Bellflower Boulevard in Downey, but collided with another car and rolled over, police said.

The driver fled the SUV on foot but was captured by officers with the CHP after a short pursuit, police said. The remaining three suspects in the SUV were arrested without incident.

Stolen property from the home on New Hampshire Avenue was found inside the SUV, including a large safe, according to police. Additional items were located in the car that were believed to be stolen from another home burglary in Chino Hills, police said.

The suspects were identified as a man, 20, from Lancaster; a man, 19, from Los Angeles; a man,  23, from Long Beach; and a 15-year-old from Hawthorne.

The three adults were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, burglary and possession of stolen property, while the 15-year-old was released on a citation to his parent, according to the Police Department.
