Federal regulators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday they have launched a new probe into the fatal crash involving a Tesla vehicle in Fontana earlier this month.

“We have launched a Special Crash Investigation,” a NHTSA spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday. “NHTSA remains vigilant in overseeing the safety of all motor vehicles and equipment, including automated technologies, and leverages SCI where appropriate.”

The May 5 crash, which happened at 2:40 a.m., involved a Tesla that collided with an overturned Mack truck.

The driver of the Tesla was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office as Stephen Michael Hendrickson, a 35-year-old from Running Springs.
