Four people died and one woman suffered major injuries after a sport utility vehicle and a pickup truck collided head-on Saturday, May 8, on Highway 18 in Apple Valley.
The coroner has not yet released the names of the people killed in the crash. But the California Highway Patrol said the dead included a 31-year-old El Monte man, a 55-year-old San Bernardino man, a 44-year-old San Bernardino woman and another woman. The agency didn’t have an age or city of residence for the second woman.
The CHP received a call about the crash on Highway 18, east of Sierra Pelona Drive, at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.
A 2021 Toyota Tundra heading west on Highway 18 went into the eastbound lanes, directly into the path of a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban, according to CHP Officer Bernardo Rubalcava in a statement.
Authorities don’t know why the Tundra’s driver steered into the opposing lane of traffic.
He said paramedics pronounced the San Bernardino man who drove the Suburban, and his two women passengers, dead at the scene. The El Monte man who drove the Tundra died shortly after, Rubalcava added.
A helicopter took the pickup’s injured passenger, a 20-year-old San Gabriel woman, to a hospital, he said.
