A Colton man was killed in an early Sunday morning, May 2, crash in Rialto and two young children were seriously injured and hospitalized in the collision, police said.
Around 3:51 a.m., a Mitsubishi was travelling east on Merrill Avenue while an Audi was travelling south on Cedar Avenue. The Mitsubishi was heading towards a red light while the Audi had a green light, according to the Rialto Police Department.
As the Audi was travelling through the intersection, the Mitsubishi allegedly ran the red light and struck the Audi, police said.
Police responded and located a fatally injured man in the driver’s seat of the Mitsubishi and two seriously injured children, ages 4 and 8, in the back seats, police said. Rialto Fire Department paramedics transported the children to a local hospital.
The driver who died was later identified as 35-year-old Nathaniel Cardenas, police said. The 23-year-old driver of the Audi had minor injuries and his 26-year-old passenger had moderate injuries and was transported to the hospital, police said.
The relationship between Cardenas and the children was not immediately clear.
The Audi’s driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police asked anyone who may have information about the incident to call at 909-421-4981.
