I may have been complicit in this. But certainly not intentionally.
Sara heard the panic in my voice when I called to tell her about my computer problem. After all, she is my daughter.
“I’m in the middle of my billing for my column and the program is not letting me finish.”
“OK, mom; it’s noon. I’ll be by in time to send it by 5.”
“That won’t work.”
“When is it due?”
“I have an hour. Can you come now?”
“Mom, I just got out of the shower and I’m soaking wet.”
“Got it, can you come now?”
“On my way.”
I left out the piece about my computer mouse slipping off the desk and crashing to the wood floor. I mean, how much of a difference would that make, and why worry her when she’s driving.
And speaking of driving.
Sara, who has an excellent driving record, told me that she may have been a little heavy-footed on the gas pedal as she sped up her street. Suddenly, red lights were flashing and a motorcycle officer appeared “out of nowhere” and gestured for her to pull over.
He asked if she knew why he had stopped her. She said that she knew, and he asked where she was going in such a hurry.
“I’m on my way to help my elderly mom.” (Really, did she have to call me elderly?)
“Is she sick?”
Sara told him that her mom was fine, but not great with computers and needed help with her billing for the paper.
He looked at her quizzically.
“Here’s my Mom’s card. She writes the Senior Moments column. You can call her to check my story. Or call the paper and they will tell you that her billing is due today.
The officer’s face opened into a grin.
“Senior Moments, really? My mother loves that column.”
He asked for her driver’s license and stepped away from the car. Sara said she was hoping he would hurry up and give her a ticket so at least she could still make it to my house before my deadline. Instead, he sent her on her way with a warning.
When she reached my house, she was all smiles.
“Not only did I make it here in time, but I brought you a topic for next week’s column.”
