A Fontana man was arrested Thursday, April 22, on suspicion of a DUI after causing a deadly, fiery crash on the 15 Freeway near Temecula, the California Highway Patrol said.
Kevin May, 47, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and may face further criminal charges, the CHP said. May remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries he sustained during the crash.
At about 12:30 p.m., a Toyota Prius was traveling south on the 15 Freeway behind a tractor trailer when the trailer stopped just south of Overland Drive due to stopped traffic ahead. While the Prius came to a stop, May failed to stop and collided into the Prius’ rear end, wedging the Prius between the two trucks.
Both the Prius and the box truck became engulfed in flames, the CHP said. Both the highway patrol and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire responded, however, the driver of the Prius was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No identifying information for the driver of the Prius was immediately available.
The driver of the semi-truck did not claim any injuries, the CHP said.
