Passenger dies after crash on 91 Freeway near Corona

A passenger died in a crash on the 91 Freeway near Corona after the car he was riding in struck a wrecked vehicle that was disabled on the freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

On Tuesday at 10:48 p.m., a Toyota Corolla was heading west on the 91 Freeway when it experienced a possible mechanical issue and lost control. The Corolla then veered to the right shoulder, struck a guardrail and then re-positioned into the far-right lane where it was disabled and “blacked out,” CHP said.

The two occupants were able to safely exit their car and ran onto the right shoulder of the highway.

About 30 seconds later, a Chevrolet Sonic travelling west on the 91 Freeway in the far-right lane struck the rear ofthe Corolla, CHP said.

The front passenger of the Sonic struck the windshield during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Corona Fire Department. The Sonic’s driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

No identifying information for the passenger was immediately available.
