A motorist was killed in a two-car crash in Moreno Valley triggered when the driver ran a red light and hit a vehicle in the middle of a turn, authorities said Thursday, March 18.
The collision happened at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Alessandro and Perris boulevards, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The driver of a Nissan Altima was going eastbound on Alessandro “at a high rate of speed” and failed to stop for a red signal, Sgt. Robert Grmusha said.
As the Nissan entered the intersection, it collided with a Toyota Corolla attempting to turn left from westbound Alessandro, onto southbound Perris, Grmusha said.
“The collision caused the Toyota to spin out, as the Nissan rolled over onto its roof before coming to rest within eastbound lanes,” he said.
Paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced the driver of the Nissan dead at the scene.
His passenger suffered major injuries, as did the driver of the Toyota, both of whom were taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment. They’re expected to survive, according to Grmusha.
He said an autopsy was pending on the Nissan driver to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The driver’s identity has not been released.
The intersection was shut down for the rest of the night while an investigation was conducted and the wreckage removed.
