Suspect in custody after pursuit, crash and police shooting in Riverside

A Riverside man was in custody following a pursuit, collision and police shooting that left him hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries on Sunday evening in Riverside.

Leopold Acuna Leon Jr., 27, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer, being a felon in possession of firearms, evading police causing injuries, hit and run causing injuries and violation of parole.

At about 6 p.m., two Riverside Police officers were patrolling when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black GMC Denali on Sedgewick Avenue near Martin Luther King Boulevard. The driver of the Denali failed to stop and led the officers on a brief pursuit, the Riverside Police Department said.

The Denali also started driving on the wrong side of road and collided into a black Ford Explorer when it came to the intersection at Kansas Avenue. When the officers caught up to the collision, the driver reversed the Denali and rammed their police vehicle, leading to a police shooting, a police news release said.

Officers safely removed the driver of the Explorer, a 60-year-old woman who sustained a broken clavicle and ribs, police said. The woman was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be stable.

The suspect driver was removed from his vehicle and taken into custody. He was grazed by gunfire and also transported to a local hospital.

Leon Jr. was on parole for an assault with a deadly weapon and during a search of the Denali, two loaded firearms were located, according to police.

The intersection was closed to all traffic for the investigation. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation with the help of the Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Unit.
