Ontario man arrested in fatal Irwindale hit-and-run

Police on Wednesday morning arrested an Ontario man suspected of a fatal hit-and-run from the previous day in Irwindale, authorities said.

Investigators found a light gray 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck they suspect was tied to the Feb. 9 crash. The vehicle was found at an Azusa home in the 1100 block of Newburgh Street at 8:35 a.m., Irwindale police said in a news release.

At the home, investigators arrested Javier Prado, 31, of Ontario on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run, police said.

Investigators used debris from the scene of the crash, as well as surveillance and security camera footage of the suspect’s vehicle as it left the scene, to identify the suspect and locate the truck, Irwindale police Sgt. Rudy Gatto said.

The truck belonged to a friend of the suspect who told investigators she had given the suspect permission to use the vehicle, Gatto said. Police did not take the woman into custody.

Police released Prado on Wednesday evening after issuing him a citation, according to county jail records. He had been held on $50,000 bail, records said.

Police said they believe the suspect was responsible for striking another man in the 6300 block of Irwindale Avenue on Tuesday morning at 5:28 a.m. and then fleeing.

Bystanders flagged down deputies with the sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau toward the man lying in the middle of northbound lanes of Irwindale Avenue, just south of the eastbound 210 freeway onramp, police previously said.

The man, whose identity was unavailable, died later that day at a local trauma center.
