NUEVO — One person was killed and five others were injured Monday afternoon in a nine-vehicle collision in Nuevo.
The wreck occurred about 4:05 p.m. on the Ramona Expressway, near Lakeview Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound when the driver failed to notice stopped traffic ahead, the CHP said in a Tuesday statement. The big rig collided with the rear of a white Ford Focus, forcing it into oncoming lanes where it collided with a black Honda Civic and a dark blue Dodge Ram.
A passenger in Focus sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene by Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department personnel, the CHP reported.
The tractor-trailer continued eastbound and struck the rear of a white Ford Ranger, pushing the Ford into the rear of a flatbed trailer, being towed by a red Ram 3500. That collision forced the Ram and trailer to travel on to an adjacent dirt shoulder, where it came to a stop.
The tractor-trailer then struck the left rear of a gray Toyota Tacoma, forcing the Tacoma onto an adjacent dirt shoulder, the CHP reported. As the tractor-trailer started to go onto the adjacent dirt shoulder, it struck the right rear of a Red GMC C-10, pushing it to collide with the right rear of a gray Honda CRV.
The tractor-trailer went down an embankment but did not overturn, according to the CHP.
CHP officers shut down both sides of the Expressway while first responders treated the injured and the wreckage was removed.
Most of the patients were taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment, while one was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar. Their injuries ranged from moderate to major, according to reports from the scene.
The investigation was continuing and any witnesses who may have observed the incident were encouraged to call the CHP’s Accident Investigation Unit at 951-637-8000.
