Three people were killed Friday evening in Yucaipa after a car carrying four people collided with a guardrail and large tree, authorities said.

A dark gray Volkswagen sedan had been traveling east on Avenue E, just east of 8th Street, in a residential area of Yucaipa, where at about 10:35 p.m., the car veered off the road, ramming into the guardrail and tree, eventually coming to a halt in a home’s front yard, said the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in a news release.

Paramedics declared three people inside the Volkswagen dead at the scene of the crash, the Sheriff’s Department said. A fourth person was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.

The identities of the deceased were not immediately released as coroner officials work to notify family members.

Authorities could not immediately say why the car had veered off the road as the cause of the crash was being investigated.
