The driver and one passenger of a hatchback rear-ended by a luxury sedan died early Saturday Dec. 12, while a man suspected of crashing into them was uninjured and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Jesus Rios, 33, of Downey, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and attempted hit and run, Hemet police said.
The collision happened at about 4 a.m. on Florida Avenue near Kirby Street. A Honda Fit headed east on Florida was stopped at a signal at Kirby when Rios, driving a BMW 535i in the same direction, slammed into the back of the Honda without braking, police said.
Dane Adkins-Radford, 21, of Hemet, was one occupant of the Fit, and died at the scene of the collision, Riverside County Coroner’s officials said in a news release. Emily Hale, also a 21-year-old Hemet resident, was taken to Riverside University Health System Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday. A second passenger of the Honda was also hospitalized.
Rios tried to run away, but was caught by a witness, police said. Authorities did not immediately specify which of the two women who died was driving the Honda.
