18-year-old Beaumont resident killed in Cherry Valley crash

An 18-year-old Beaumont resident was killed Wednesday, Nov. 4, in a traffic collision in Cherry Valley, the California Highway Patrol said.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified the motorist as Cody Kolkow.

The crash was reported at about 6 p.m. at Brookside Avenue and Union Street on the Beaumont border.

A 39-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet Silverado south on Union Street and stopped at a stop sign at Brookside before proceeding through the intersection, the CHP said. At the same time, a driver later identified as Kolkow entered the intersection driving a Ford Mustang.

The Ford unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the Chevrolet, which hit the right front of the Ford. The Ford spun, and the driver’s side hit a wooden power pole, the CHP said. Kolkow, who was alone in the Ford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chevrolet driver was not injured. His right-front passenger was hospitalized with minor injuries. Impairment did not appear to have contributed to the collision, the CHP said.

The damage to the power pole caused electricity outages in the area.
