All charges have been dropped against a San Bernardino man who was charged in June with gross vehicular manslaughter in the death of his mother in a traffic crash, court records show.
A judge on July 14 dismissed the three felony charges and all allegations in the case against Stephen Kirk Strother Jr. The dismissals were made on the motion of the prosecutor.
San Bernardino police arrested Strother after a June 8 crash at Ninth Street and Waterman Avenue in the city. Police said in a news release about the incident that Strother’s first name was Steven; court records spell it as Stephen.
At the time of his arrest, officers said Strother and his mother, Algetta Michelle Strother, 54, were racing each other and crashed as they attempted to pass a third car they came upon while they were heading west on Ninth.
None of the charges or allegations in the dismissed case claimed Stephen Strother, who was 26 when arrested, was racing.
Algetta Strother died when the Chevrolet Tahoe she was driving rolled and struck a tree, a standpipe, and a light pole. A passenger in the Tahoe was injured.
Stephen Strother, driving a Buick Century, was not hurt, police said. The driver and the passenger in the third car were not injured, either, police said.
The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office did not respond to a message seeking comment about why it sought dismissal of the charges.
