A Riverside woman was killed early Saturday in a suspected DUI crash on the 15 Freeway in Temecula just south of Rancho California Road, authorities said.
Cynthia Avalos, 28, was riding in the front passenger seat of a 2004 Scion XA with the driver, with one other passenger in the back seat, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.
Avalos was identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
Just after 1 a.m., the driver abruptly turned the car to the right, sending it off the southbound 15 Freeway lanes, down a dirt embankment, and into a tree, the CHP said.
The tree was cut from its base by the force of the car’s crash, and the it landed on a car parked on a nearby street.
Paramedics took the driver and two passengers to Inland Valley Medical Center. Avalos died at the hospital. The driver and the rear-seat passenger, both unidentified men, each had major injuries, the CHP said.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, the CHP said.
