A Colton man was arrested on suspicion of murder Tuesday, July 28, after investigators say he intentionally ran over two people Saturday, killing one and leaving another hospitalized.

Roberto Carlos Ponciano, 29, was arrested at the San Bernardino County sheriff’s station, according to county jail records. He was being held at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $1 million bail.

The collision happened just after midnight at the intersection of Grand Avenue and W. Valley Boulevard in Colton, where authorities found two people in the road. Both were hospitalized. Ruben Colunga, 50, of Colton, died just after 4 a.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

A warrant was then issued for the arrest of Ponciano, who was taken into custody at 1 p.m.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller said investigators believe Ponciano’s actions were intentional. No motive was announced.

Investigators ask that anyone with information on the case call Detective Bruce Southworth at 909-387-3589 or leave information anonymously with WeTip at 800-782-7463 or on its website at wetip.com.
