One person died after a single-vehicle crash in San Jacinto on Tuesday morning, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
The crash happened just after 6 a.m. near the area of Warren Road and Cotton Avenue, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. When deputies arrived, they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames on the shoulder of Cottonwood Avenue.
The Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department put out the fire and a person was found inside the vehicle, officials said.
The Sheriff’s Department said an early investigation indicated that a red Mercedes-Benz was traveling west on Cottonwood Avenue, but in the eastbound lanes.
Authorities said the Mercedes-Benz was moving at a high rate-of-speed and the driver narrowly avoided other vehicles driving in the opposite direction.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle and struck several trees and a fence before coming to rest on the edge of a park,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
The identification of the driver who died in the crash was withheld until family is notified. The crash was under investigation.
