1 dead after crash on Highway 330 near Running Springs

Highway 330 was closed on Tuesday and a box truck driver died when the vehicle crashed due to an apparent brake failure, officials said.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at around 10:45 a.m. on Highway 330 near Running Springs when a 52-year-old from La Mirada was driving south on the highway.

As the truck continued south on Highway 330, the vehicle appeared to have a brake failure and picked up speed as it entered a sharp left curve in the roadway, the CHP said. The vehicle hit the guardrail, overturned and flipped down the mountainside.

The driver was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 4 p.m. Information on identity was not immediately available.

The crash was under investigation and Highway 330 remained closed as of Tuesday evening while crews recovered the vehicle wreckage, Caltrans said.

Officials said the highway would remain closed until the vehicle was recovered, and 100 feet of guardrail was repaired. Hazmat crews were also at the scene of the crash for cleanup. Roughly 40 gallons of diesel fuel had spilled from the truck, the CHP said.

The CHP said the highway reopened at 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
