Police are searching for the driver of a white semi-truck who drove away Tuesday afternoon, May 19, after a white sedan rear ended the truck in Ontario. The sedan driver died in the collision.
The crash took place about 1:29 p.m. in the intersection of Airport Drive and Terminal Way in front of Ontario International Airport, the Ontario Police Department said in a news release.
A fast-moving white Chevrolet Impala slammed into the rear of the tractor-trailer, said Ontario police Officer Eliseo Guerrero, a spokesman for the department.
After the crash, the semi-truck continued traveling and left the scene, police said.
The driver of the sedan, identified only as a man by police, died later on Tuesday at a hospital.
Police described the suspect’s vehicle as a white semi-truck with a sleeper cab, towing a 53-foot trailer. The trailer is missing its metal rear guard, police said.
A nearby security camera captured the incident. Guerrero said investigators believe the speed of the sedan had been a factor in the crash.
Even so, Guerrero said investigators are considering the truck driver as a suspect since he left the scene without administering aid or providing contact information.
On Wednesday evening, investigators were pursuing several leads that may point to the truck driver’s identity, he said.
