The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal vehicle crash believed to involve alcohol on Highway 38 near Bryant Street, northeast of Mentone and north of Yucaipa.
CHP units were called at 5:19 p.m. Sunday to a report of an overturned vehicle. A coroner’s representative was later summoned to the scene, the CHP log showed.
Officer Ivan Sandoval, a spokesman for the CHP, said Monday that the crash happened after a Ford F-150 pickup was involved in two other hit-and-run crashes. The 17-year-old driver from Los Angeles was heading north on Highway 38 at the time of the hit-and-runs.
After the crashes, he turned around and drove south on Highway 38.
“Approximately a half-mile south of the first two collision scenes, the driver lost control of the Ford,” the CHP collision report said.
Sandoval said the Ford overturned several times on the right shoulder of the highway, injuring the driver, injuring three passengers and killing the fourth passenger.
Everyone involved in the fatal crash was 17- or 16-years-old.
The boy who died in the crash was a 16-year-old from Beaumont, Jose Hutierrez-Ibarra, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.
The CHP said alcohol is believed to be factor in the crash, and the driver was arrested. Authorities are still investigating the crash.
