Police arrested a man Wednesday, May 6 suspected of being drunk and high behind the wheel during a crash that killed one of his two passengers in February.
Javan Draper, 45, of Pomona was arrested by officers serving a warrant Wednesday near Grand Avenue and White Street at about 9:49 a.m., Pomona Police Department spokeswoman Ally Mejia said. He was booked on suspicion of murder and DUI causing death. The suspect was held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility with bail set at over $2 million as of Thursday evening, according to inmate records.
Anthony Tucker Jr., 23, of Pomona died at the scene of the crash that occurred about 2 a.m. Feb. 18 in the 2200 block of North Garey Avenue, police said.
“(A) comprehensive investigation revealed the suspect, Javan Draper, was driving southbound on N. Garey Avenue at a high rate of speed, while under the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs, when the vehicle hit the concrete center median causing it to roll over into a large palm tree,” according to a Pomona Police Department statement.
“(The) investigators learned Draper was driving on a suspended driver’s license and had a recent DUI conviction,” police said. “As part of his court proceedings, Draper was warned of the dangers of driving while intoxicated. Because of this advisement, and Draper’s actions, he is eligible to be charged with murder.”
