A toddler and a woman from Upland ended up in a hospital Thursday night after a suspected drunk driver hit their vehicle and fled – before getting caught by Pomona police, authorities said.
The 44-year-old woman complained of pain while the child was not injured, according to police spokeswoman Aly Mejia. It wasn’t clear if the two victims were related.
Officers recovered a handgun the suspect allegedly threw away while running.
Prior to the collision, the suspect was heading north on Towne Avenue while the other driver was traveling east on Mission Boulevard, Mejia said.
Police received a call of an injury crash at Mission and Towne around 8 p.m.
Officers found the fleeing driver and chased him.
“(The suspect) discarded a handgun while fleeing and was captured a few blocks away,” Pomona Sgt. Edgard Padilla said in a statement.
Police arrested Alejandro Aviles, 27, of Etiwanda on suspicion of driving under the influence resulting in an injury collision, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a high-capacity magazine.
Booking records show he posted bond and was released from custody Friday morning.
