Crash damages Riverside overpass, forcing closures on 91 Freeway

A crash on an overpass flung chunks of concrete and other debris onto the 91 Freeway in west Riverside Friday, prompting the California Highway Patrol to partially close the artery while crews cleaned up the mess.

A tow truck plowed into the side of the Buchanan Street overcrossing just before noon, hurtling pieces of the railing and other structural components into eastbound lanes, the California Highway Patrol said.

The impact left long pieces of rebar exposed from the bridge, but that was not posing a public safety threat, according to the CHP.

The driver was not injured.

Motorists swerved around the debris until officers arrived and temporarily shut down most lanes. Traffic backed up for miles into Corona.
