A man died Tuesday night after a crash and shooting in Moreno Valley, and another man was arrested on suspicion of murder, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies initially responded to the 23500 block of Sunnymead Ranch Parkway after getting reports of a disturbance in the area with at least one person armed with a firearm, the Sheriff’s Department said. While on their way to the scene, the deputies got another report that vehicles in the area drove away quickly.
Two men were detained by deputies after a vehicle was pulled over near Heacock and Parkland avenues, officials said.
The Sheriff’s Department said that within minutes of the initial call, another call came in about shots fired as well as a crash in the area of Sunnymead Ranch Parkway and Perris Boulevard.
When the deputies got to the site of the crash, they found a white Dodge Charger crashed into a wall, authorities said. A man was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.
“One of the men detained during the traffic stop was determined to be a suspect,” officials said.
That man was identified as Jayvonte Wilkinson, 24, of Moreno Valley. Wilkinson was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center early on Wednesday, according to jail records.
The man who was shot and killed was identified as Jared Lewis, 23, of Moreno Valley, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The Sheriff’s Department said the incident was still under investigation, and anyone with information can contact it at 951-955-2777.
