A 20-year-old man facing a possible vehicular homicide charge for allegedly killing his car’s passenger while fleeing from sheriff’s deputies in Jurupa Valley nearly two years ago was in custody on $1 million bail.
Christian Pinon, of Pomona, was arrested Thursday after an investigation into a car crash on Sept. 29, 2018, that happened after deputies shut down an illegal sideshow at Agua Mansa Road and Brown Avenue, sheriff’s officials said.
A sideshow is an informal gathering of car enthusiasts who often shut down city streets to illegally perform dangerous car tricks in front of spectators.
According to Sgt. Ernie Esquibel of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, arriving deputies saw and attempted to pull over Pinon’s 2006 Pontiac GTO, which was being driven erratically in the intersection.
The GTO initially stopped, but then sped off and almost hit two sheriff’s patrol vehicles before crashing down the street. A man in the car died due to his injures. His name was not immediately available.
Investigators arrested Pinon in Dana Point, in Orange County, jail records show. He was booked at Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of vehicular homicide, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and evading. He awaits his arraignment on Monday.
