A pursuit of a suspected stolen SUV that started in Fontana on Wednesday afternoon ended in Montclair after the vehicle flipped over as it left the 10 Freeway.
The pursuit started at around 3:10 p.m. near the area of Sierra Avenue and Valley Boulevard, according to the Fontana Police Department. Police tried to stop the 2016 Hyundai Tucson but the driver drove away and let two people out at Sierra and San Bernardino avenues. Those two people were detained.
The Hyundai driver then traveled through surface streets in Fontana and Rialto and then got onto the 210 Freeway, heading west and exiting the freeway in Upland.
Police said the Hyundai driver got off the 210 Freeway on Campus Avenue, drove south on surface streets and got onto the 10 Freeway heading west.
The pursuit eventually came to an end as the vehicle flipped while getting off the 10 Freeway at Central Avenue in Montclair.
A fire flared up in the SUV but was quickly extinguished, authorities said.
“The driver was arrested following a brief struggle with officers, and was taken to an area hospital for treatment,” Fontana police said in a statement. That driver will be booked into the West Valley Detention Center after leaving the hospital.
The remaining passenger of the SUV was also arrested shortly after the crash, Fontana police said.
The names of the suspects were not immediately released.
Caltrans had advised motorists to avoid the westbound 10 Freeway in Montclair while police were in the area.
