A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy escaped injury Sunday night after his patrol SUV landed on top of an unoccupied, parked pickup truck during a suspect chase. A video captured the SUV going airborne through an intersection and bottoming out in a shower of sparks moments before it hit the truck.
The pursuit involved two deputies, department spokeswoman Jodi Miller said in an email Monday.
The chase started when a deputy pulled over a vehicle for a minor traffic violation just before 8 p.m. at Base Line Street and Bobbet Drive. The vehicle stopped, then the driver took off as the deputy approached, she said.
The suspect driver struck another vehicle at Victoria and 5th Streets. That vehicle, for unknown reasons, left the location. Miller said authorities don’t know how many people were in it, or how badly it was damaged. The suspect vehicle also continued to flee.
A second deputy, trying to catch up to the chase, struck the parked truck after going through the intersection of 5th Street and Sunnyside Avenue. The unidentified deputy did not need medical aid, and no other injuries were reported.
The fleeing suspect escaped, and the vehicle struck at Victoria and 5th streets was not found, Miller said. The California Highway Patrol was investigating the crash and did not have additional information as of late Monday afternoon.
