A 50-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning in a hit-and-run crash in Claremont, and the driver was arrested Thursday evening on suspicion of hitting and killing the man.
The accident was first reported about 2:30 a.m. on Towne Avenue near Syracuse Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“At this time, we have no eyewitnesses,” Sgt. David Demetz of the Claremont Police Department told NBC4 Wednesday. “We haven’t been able to find video surveillance, although we’re trying to work on any possible leads.”
The station also reported Los Angeles County firefighters came across the body as they were returning from another call.
The man who was hit and killed was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner as James Victor Radzik, 56, of Rancho Cucamonga.
Claremont police said investigators were able to identify the suspect and suspect vehicle and surveillance was conducted in the 500 block of East Footbill Boulevard in Pomona.
Helen Scheuplein, 67, of Covina, was arrested by police on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death.
Scheuplein was booked into the Claremont Police Department jail with a bail of $100,000, police said.
