A pickup truck driver allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a car in San Bernardino, leaving one man dead and a child seriously injured on Saturday, Nov. 9, and investigators suspect alcohol played a role in the crash. The pickup driver was arrested on suspicion of murder.
The collision happened at about 3:49 a.m., San Bernardino Police officials said Sunday in a news release. A Toyota Tacoma failed to stop at a traffic signal and crashed into a Honda Civic that was in the process of making a left turn onto Mt. Vernon Avenue from eastbound lanes of 5th Street.
The 56-year-old driver of the Civic died at the scene of the collision, while the car’s passenger, a child between the ages of 4 and 5, was taken to a hospital with “major injuries,” police said. Authorities described the minor’s condition as critical Sunday evening.
The man allegedly behind the wheel of the pickup, Jeffrey Lukes, 37, of Rialto, fled the scene of the crash on foot, but was later arrested, police said. He was booked on suspicion of murder, and held without bail at the West Valley Detention Center, inmate records show. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, Nov. 12.
