Two teenage brothers from San Jacinto died in a weekend off-road vehicle crash in the desert west of Blythe, the Riverside County coroner’s office said Tuesday.
Javier Castillo,13, and Eliseo Castillo, 14, died Sunday when a 2015 Polaris RZR all-terrain vehicle driven by a 13-year-old girl with the brothers and another passenger on board rolled onto its right side as the girl tried to make a left turn, officials said.
The brothers were sitting on top of the right-rear door panel with their backs facing to the outside of the vehicle and were not wearing seat belts, the California Highway Patrol said. They were ejected and the RZR rolled on top of them.
The 13-year-old girl, also from San Jacinto, and the other passenger, a 9-year-old girl from Blythe, were both wearing seat belts and hospitalized with moderate injuries, the CHP said.
The crash, just before noon Sunday, was on a dirt patch south of Interstate 10 in the unincorporated community of Mesa Verde. Neither drugs or alcohol played a roll in the crash, the CHP said.
