HEMET — An investigation was continuing Monday into the death of a 21-year-old man who was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Corvette that slammed into a utility pole in Hemet.

Christopher McKelvey of San Jacinto was fatally injured about 11:55 p.m. Sunday on Mountain Road, just west of Soboba Street, according to the Hemet Police Department.

Sgt. Dan Reinbolt said McKelvey was traveling westbound when he apparently lost control of the 1989 Corvette, which crashed into a power pole on the north side of the roadway. No other vehicles were involved.

Paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

Reinbolt said it was not immediately known whether alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.

Mountain was closed in both directions for five hours while an investigation was conducted at the scene.
