Ontario police arrested a man early Wednesday on suspicion that he struck and killed a bicyclist in a hit-and-run crash just one hour prior.
Ontario Police Department officers responded to the area of Mission Boulevard and Baker Avenue at around 1:10 a.m. after a bystander found the bicyclist on the shoulder of the road and called police. That bicyclist was pronounced dead by medical personnel near the site of the crash.
The bicyclist’s identity was not immediately available. Police said the person’s identity would be formally released once family was notified.
Just after 2:30 a.m., authorities said officers found a man inside a damaged car in a parking lot at 1320 S. Baker Avenue. The man was bleeding from his head and face, and damage on the car was consistent with evidence found at the scene of the crash.
Julio Tapia, 31, of Ontario, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center with a bail of $250,000, and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
