Woman dead, man arrested on suspicion of murder, DUI, after rear-end crash on 210 Freeway in Highland

A rear-end crash on the 210 Freeway early Sunday resulted in the death of an Apple Valley woman and the arrest of a man from the same town.

The Calfornia Highway Patrol in San Bernardino said in a news release that the crash happened in Highland at around 1:09 a.m., just east of Arden Avenue on the 210 Freeway, when a Dodge Charger crashed into the back of a Lincoln Navigator.

The crash sent the Lincoln off the right shoulder of the freeway, and into a light pole, officials said. The 49-year-old woman driving the Lincoln was sent to a local hospital with major injuries, and later died. Her identity was not available.

The CHP said both vehicles were traveling at unknown speeds.

Ivan Sandoval, spokesman for the CHP, said the driver of the Dodge, 33-year-old Zachariah Jorel Zile, left the scene of the crash and was arrested shortly after.

Zile was arrested on suspicion of murder, driving under the influence and hit-and-run, according to court records. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center with and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday morning.
