A woman riding in a BMW died Friday after the driver of the car crashed in Highland following a brief chase with deputies, authorities said.
The driver, identified as Timothy Johnston, 25, of San Bernardino, was arrested following the crash on suspicion of a bevy of charges including vehicular manslaughter and gross negligence, evading a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, burglary and an unrelated warrant, also for vehicle theft, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
The woman, whose identity was withheld while authorities inform family members, was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, the release said.
At about 6:30 a.m., Friday, Sheriff’s deputies in San Bernardino tried to pull over a BMW sedan, which they believed was a stolen vehicle. However, the driver of the car began to speed away, north along Palm Avenue near Third Street.
The chase took them to the city of Highland, where the driver of the car lost control near the intersection of Palm Avenue and Nona Avenue, striking a Toyota Tundra and slamming into a power pole.
With the car lying on its roof, the man driving the car ran away. Deputies later found him hiding in a nearby neighborhood.
After receiving treatment at a local hospital, the suspect was booked at a county jail.
The driver of the Toyota Tundra was not injured in the crash.
