WINCHESTER — A man was killed Tuesday when his SUV rolled off a major road between Menifee and Hemet.
The fatality occurred a little after 7:30 a.m. on Domenigoni Parkway at Leon Road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Darren Meyer.
The driver, a 50-year-old Hemet resident, for unknown reasons allowed his Mazda 5 to leave the roadway while traveling west on Dominigoni Parkway, Meyer said.
The Mazda jumped the curb on the northwestern side of the intersection and struck a traffic signal pole, then overturned before coming to rest in a dirt field.
Meyer said the driver was trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.
The traffic signal struck by the SUV was damaged but remained operational. All but one lane of westbound Domenigoni Parkway was closed while the crash was under investigation.
