Driver killed running across freeway in Anaheim identified as a woman from Upland

A woman was killed on the 5 Freeway when she ran across lanes of traffic after a crash in Anaheim on Monday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Sgt. David Davis said the agency received a call about a crash on the southbound side of the freeway, and quickly received another call about a pedestrian running across the northbound side of the same freeway.

“Unfortunately that pedestrian was struck,” Davis said. “The female driver was one of the people involved in the collision on the southbound side. For unknown reasons she exited her vehicle, jumped over the divider and attempted to cross the northbound side. That’s where she was struck.”

The woman was later identified as Brieanne Campbell, 29, of Upland in an Orange County Coroner’s Office press release. She was declared dead at 9:10 p.m. Monday.

The initial rollover crash happened on the freeway at about 8:56 p.m. near Disneyland Drive, Anaheim Police dispatchers said.

A SigAlert was issued, and several lanes in both directions were shut down near Euclid Street at about 9:22 p.m., CHP logs showed.

A northbound HOV lane was open by 10:39 p.m., but four other northbound lanes remained closed for a time. Caltrans said just after midnight that all lanes had re-opened.

Southbound lanes initially were affected, but all southbound lanes had been re-opened by 10:36 p.m.
