A speeding SUV that went through a red light at the intersection of Ramona Expressway and Evans Road in Perris on Wednesday morning struck a car and killed the Moreno Valley woman who was driving it, the California Highway Patrol said.
She was identified Thursday as Patricia Workman, 55, who died at the intersection, the Riverside County Coroner’s office said.
The speeding black 2005 Nissan Xterra was going eastbound on the expressway just before 8:30 a.m. when it ran the red light and struck the Toyota Camry driven by Workman, who was heading north on Evans, CHP Officer Juan Quintero said.
The force of the impact propelled both vehicles into the westbound lanes of the expressway, Quintero said.
The two vehicles struck a 2014 Chevrolet van. The driver of the van suffered minor injuries. A student inside the van, who was being transported to the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, was not injured, the CHP report said.
The driver of the Nissan, identified by the CHP as 29-year-old Misael Avalos Castaneda of Perris, fled on foot after the accident and was arrested by Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies, Quintero said. Castaneda was hospitalized with major injuries and is under investigation for vehicular homicide, Quintero added.
