Log ride at Riverside’s Castle Park to be closed indefinitely after injury-causing crash

The log ride at Castle Park, which left one woman critically injured and two other members of her family with minor injuries after a Saturday, May 25, crash will stay closed indefinitely, according to the vice president of marketing for the park’s parent company.

There’s no time frame for how long separate investigations by officials at the Riverside park and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health will take, said Michele Wischmeyer, vice president of marketing and sales for Palace Entertainment.

Cal/OSHA opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and correct any safety violations Saturday, and investigators were on site as recently as Wednesday, agency spokesman Frank Polizzi said that day.

Castle Park was opened in 1976 by Bud Hurlbut, who also built several attractions at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, including the Calico Mine Ride and Timber Mountain Log Ride.

No updates on the family’s condition were available Wednesday, May 29.
