The Pomona Police Department said it plans to arrest one of the people involved in Tuesday’s fatal crash in Pomona that left a 6-year-old Upland child dead.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday near White and McKinley avenues when a vehicle heading north crossed the center divider and collided into another vehicle driving south.

“A child was located in the rear seat of one of the involved vehicles.  Los Angeles County Fire Department pronounced the child deceased upon their arrival. Both involved drivers are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.  The investigation is on-going,” police said in a statement.

The child was identified as Julian Anthony George, a 6-year-old Upland boy, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office and police. Authorities said he was not secured in a car seat.

Police said Franky Provencio, a 19-year-old from Pomona, was the driver of the vehicle that crossed the center median.

Provencio and his passenger were injured in the crash. The passenger was released from the hospital after being treated, according to police.

Peter George, the driver of the southbound car that carried the boy, “is in critical condition at a local hospital,” officials said in a press release.

Provencio will be arrested on suspicion of murder, driving under the influence causing a death, possession of a controlled substance and a probation violation.

“Assisting Patrol Officers were able to determine that Suspect Provencio was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs,” police said.

“Their investigation also revealed the driver of the southbound vehicle had also consumed alcohol prior to the collision.  His level of intoxication at the time of the collision is not yet known and investigators are still following up.”

Officials also said Provencio was driving with a suspended driver’s license.

“When suspect Provencio is released from the hospital, he will be booked at the Pomona Police Jail,” police said.

Authorities gave no indication that an arrest or charges were pending for George.
