In coordination with Foothill Transit, the volunteers working with the dogs hopped on the eastbound Line 492 at San Dimas and Bonita avenues for a 25-minute ride to the Montclair Place mall.

The training helped prepare the puppies to safely navigate public transit as working guide dogs, according to a news release. People who are blind rely largely on public transit. The voyage helped them learn the sights, sounds, smells and surfaces common on public transit, as well as how to settle calmly at their handlers’ feet, out of the way of fellow customers, while the bus is moving.

Guide Dogs of America has a “full nursery of puppies right now, and we’re actively looking for raiser homes,” said Stephanie Colman, puppy program coordinator. Volunteers interested in raising a future guide dog may contact Colman at 818-833-6447. The current litters will be placed in homes in June.
