A thief took a Riverside Transit Agency bus for a brief ride while the driver took a bathroom break Wednesday, April 24, authorities said. The thief was arrested about 10 minutes after the theft.

The bus on Route 41 was empty while sitting at Riverside University Health System in Moreno Valley on a layover about 12:15 p.m., RTA spokesman Bradley Weaver said. How the thief entered the bus and managed to start it was under investigation, Weaver said. The bus had vanished by the time the driver returned.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies found the bus in the area of Eucalyptus Avenue and Morrison Street. The driver pulled over about a mile and a half away about 12:25 p.m., a department spokesman said. The person driving the bus was arrested.

The buses have a tracking system and live video that allowed RTA to watch the driver, Weaver said.

This was a smaller bus operated and staffed by Empire Transportation under contract to RTA, Weaver said.
