11-year-old boy dies after bicycle crash in Fontana

An 11-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon after he suffered trauma to his chest following a crash into another boy’s bicycle as the two rode around inside their apartment complex, Fontana police said on Monday.

The boy crashed into the back of his 8-year-old friend’s bicycle tire – sending the older boy into his own handlebars and then onto the ground, Fontana police Officer Rich Guerrero said.

“This is just a very tragic accident,” Guerrero said.

Officers and medical personnel were called to the apartment complex in the 9200 block of Citrus Avenue around 3 p.m Sunday, but the boy’s mother already had started taking him to the hospital.

The mother stopped at San Bernardino and Juniper avenues, where paramedics arrived and began trying to help the boy, who was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Neither child was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, police said. However, that did not appear to factor into the boy’s fatal injuries.
