A motorist who authorities said appeared to use the shoulder of the southbound 15 Freeway in Murrieta to pass a big rig, then crashed into a concrete pillar and died in a fiery crash, has been identified.

Steve Kramer, 50, of Murrieta died Thursday, March 21 in the single-vehicle crash when the 2013 Ford Explorer he was driving struck the pillar, a support column for the 215 Freeway overpass, the Riverside County Coroner’s office said.

The California Highway Patrol said the vehicle appeared to be on the right shoulder of the freeway as the driver tried to pass a big-rig in the slow lane, and was going about 80 mph when it struck the pillar. No one else was involved in the crash that happened shortly before noon.
