CLAREMONT — A crash involving at least 15 vehicles Sunday morning on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Claremont left a 22-year-old man dead, two people with critical injuries and at least nine people with minor injuries, authorities said.
The crash on the westbound freeway at the Indian Hill Boulevard on-ramp occurred a little before 1:55 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash was triggered when a 30-year-old motorist in a 2017 Dodge Charger driving in the carpool lane at “an unsafe speed for current traffic conditions” rear-ended a 2018 Toyota Camry that was momentarily stopped due to traffic from a temporary construction zone, the CHP said.
That impact pushed the Toyota forward where it struck a Honda Civic that was stopped in the number two lane. The Dodge continued in a westerly direction and struck a 2006 BMW 550i that was stopped in the carpool lane.
That impact moved the BMW, and it struck a 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL 55 which was stopped in the number one lane.
Paramedics dispatched to the scene at 1:57 a.m. reported at least 15 vehicles were involved in the crash, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher.
The fatality was the driver in the 2018 Camry, a 22-year-old man from Tolleson, Arizona, the CHP said.
The driver who allegedly triggered the crash, a 30-year-old man from Long Beach, suffered minor injuries and was released on scene. It was not immediately known if he was cited by police.
