A 65-year-old Perris man crossing an unlit stretch of Highway 74 east of Lake Elsinore was fatally struck by a hit-run driver Tuesday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man, who was not fully identified by authorities, was trying to cross the highway west of Greenwald Avenue in a rural county area between Lake Elsinore and Perris shortly after 8 p.m., the CHP said.
The man was heading from the north right shoulder of the highway to the center median when a vehicle struck him in the westbound No. 1, or fast lane. The driver left the scene, the CHP said.
Highway 74 in that area is a divided roadway with two lanes for each direction, with a posted speed limit of 60 mph.
There were no witnesses to the incident, and there is no description of the vehicle or driver, the CHP said.

The injured man was wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and dark blue shoes. Officers at the scene when he was put into an ambulance “detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” from him.
The man was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m.
