Three motorcyclists were hurt, one of them with major injuries, when a car on Arrow Route near Fontana jumped a curb, went into oncoming traffic and struck the trio of riders Saturday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver of a gray 2017 Toyota Camry, identified as Matthew Mercier, 31, of Rancho Cucamonga, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, the CHP said in an initial report on the incident.
Mercier was driving east an Arrow Route heading toward Cottonwood Avenue in a San Bernardino County area south of Fontana and east of Rancho Cucamonga at 4:15 p.m.Saturday, the report said.
He lost control of the car as it went through the intersection at Cottonwood, struck the concrete curb on the southeast corner, veered into westbound traffic and struck the three motorcyclists, identified as men, two age 23 and one 24, all of Pomona. They were not identified further by authorities.
The report says the motorcyclists were all using safety equipment for riding, which includes helmets. All were taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where one of the 23-year-old men was treated for major injuries, the report said.
The 24-year-old had moderate injuries and the other 23-year-old had minor injuries, the report said.
Mercier was taken to Montclair Hospital Medical Center, in Montclair, for minor injuries. His name did not appear in county jail records on Sunday.
